About Psychological Therapy
Can psychological therapy help me?
Psychological therapy can help you deal with any difficulties, life issues or symptoms of psychological disorder. However, it is not only for resolving problems. It is valuable for anyone who wants to learn more about themselves and their relationships and improve their general sense of emotional well-being.
Though discussion, a therapist will help you identify the areas in your life that you are struggling with or that you do not understand, we will then work together in identifying goals for change and formulate a clear plan of action as to how you can reach your goals. Therapy is about being kind to yourself, treating yourself with compassion and understanding and learning from your past so that unhelpful cycles can be broken and do not keep repeating themselves. The role of a therapist will be to help you successfully navigate through this journey so that you reach your end goals.
What does a clinical psychologist do?
Clinical psychologists are mental health professionals who are trained to listen to a person’s problems to try to find out what’s causing them and help find a solution.
As well as listening and discussing important issues with you, a psychologist can introduce you to strategies for resolving problems that can include strategies to help you change your attitudes and behaviour. Therapists teach specific skills to help people tolerate painful emotions, manage relationships more effectively or improve behaviour. You may also be encouraged to develop your own solutions.
What is psychological therapy?
Psychological therapy is a type of talking therapy therapy used to treat emotional problems and mental health conditions.
It involves talking to a trained therapist, either one-to-one, in a group or with your wife, husband or partner if appropriate. It allows you to look deeper into your problems and worries and deal with troublesome habits and a wide range of mental disorders, such as depression, anxiety and other more complex mental health problems.
Psychological therapy can help you to discuss feelings you have about yourself and other people, for example family or other people close to you. In some cases, couples or families are offered joint therapy sessions together. Psychological therapy can also help with problem solving other life issues such as work stress issues, bereavement, relationship issues. A therapist will treat sessions as confidential.
